Operators Are Standing By

Inspired by Ev and pressured by my last-minute adoption of NaBloPoMo, I’ve decided to open the floor to questions and inspiration. Something you wanted to ask? A topic you’d like to see me cover? Life, design, photography, community … the floor is open. Leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer in upcoming posts. And thanks!

What’s a typical weekend like for the Powazeks? What do you eat? Where do you go for fun? What time do you go to bed? Wake up? I like the seemingly mundane. ;]

Since so much of what you do has to do with a social network of screen names, could you discuss intelligent ways of speaking with all of these people while maintaining some sort of life?
What is the easiest way to keep track of who you are talking to?
I am also curious to know, how often do you get contacted by someone, speak with them for a while, then realize later that it is actually someone you have already heard of.

Oh, and don’t you hate pants?

the floor is open, you say…ok, so what do you think of your country’s invaision of Iraq and the wounded US troops who cannot get proper medical care upon their return home? And what do you think of the fact that there is footage in which, your President, George Walker Bush is being told the day before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orelans, that the levees would not be able to sustain the impact of the hurricane? Any thoughts? And how about the fact that so many of the rescue workers at the twin towers on 9/11 are being denied medical health insurance for the respiratory diseases they developed from the contaminated air after the towers fell? Do you think your country is the way it is because it’s full of people like youself who are intelligent and skilled but who, judging from what you write about on your blog, have no interest in or concern about their government’s actions? Oh, yeah, and what time do you go to bed?

I’m studying web development. Do you have any tips for crossing that hump between moderately-talented-amateur to professional (or you know, semi-almost-professional)?

Tell me anything and everything about Spoo. The onset of the pups over the years has caused a lack of updates on Spoo and plants named Fred (which is not to say that I don’t love any and all dog-related information as well).

I generally post every day anyway, so I’m using NaBloPoMo to find new blogs to read. I’m curious about your blogroll. What are some of your favorites? Are there any undiscovered gems out there that you’d like to share?

The fridge is often one of the biggest pieces of furniture a person will own apart from a couch or a bed. Like the other two- it can be a an epicenter for communication. But, unlike the other 2, it is also a giant magnet board for mementos, notes, communications, calenders and reminders.

Can you post a picture of what your fridge door looks like?

We were thrilled by your presentation at NCHC today, and appreciated your challenge to academia to make its medium (of liberation and empowerment) match its message (of sit down, shut up, and believe what we tell you). I’d love to hear your reflections from your drop-in visit to the world of Honors education, with all its promise and contradictions.

Ok, another one - I just stumbled across this today: an archive of airplane menus from the 60s & 70s (Filet Minon or Eggs Puka Puka, anyone?) from the transportation library at Northwestern University. It made me think about the role libraries play today. What are your thoughts on that?

Hi Derek
I was wondering if you have ever regretted your transparency on the web. Has it worked as a negative or positive influence?
Derek, great blog, terrific internet presence, I like your style.
Thanks for being you

Please tell me more about your photography. The series you did in NYC last year during the heatwave was fantastic and inspiring. When you are photographing people do you let them know you’re photographing them? Do you engage them in conversation before or after the shot? I love street photography but it’s been difficult for me to shoot people when they notice me and my camera and I either abandon the shot or take it in stealth mode and hope they don’t get mad. I’d love any tips you want to share on this topic.
